Comparing the DOT, O*NET and eDOT
Course Number: 58

CPE Self-Study Notes:

Almost all self-insured and fully insured replacement-income plans receive (as an offset) amounts from U.S. Social Security. Workers’ Compensation, unemployment insurance, and long- and short-term disability policies all utilize integration with Social Security benefits. Understanding the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT), the resource utilized in SSA disability determiations, is essential in assisting beneficiaries, carriers and clients. (This area of legal activity is so large that an association exists to serve its attorneys; see the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives http://www.nosscr.org/.)

This course describes the 3 major occupational classification systems used by HR staff: the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT), O*NET and the enhanced Dictionary of Occupational Titles (eDOT). You will learn how to use each system and which is best applied to individual cases of hiring workers, setting pay, performing outplacement, and making transferable skills assessments.
