Almost all self-insured and fully insured replacement-income plans receive (as an offset) amounts from U.S. Social Security. Workers’ Compensation, unemployment insurance, and long- and short-term disability policies all utilize integration with Social Security benefits. Understanding the disability claims process and the application process, the reasons for denials, and the challenges that may be made (many of which occur at Steps 4 and 5 of the process with use of the DOT) is essential in assisting beneficiaries and working with carriers.
