Salary Increase Planning
Course Number: 78

Compensation Analyst Credential (CAC) Notes:

Planning salary increases is a crucial task for organizations. The type, manner, and budgeting procedure utilized with salary increases in organizations of any size have a significant impact on employee turnover, motivation, and performance. Little new exists in this area, as most practices are long-standing (with the exception of software applications that assist in the budgeting process). Before one starts planning these increases, it is worthwhile to know the positive and negative attributes of different salary-increase methods. Surprisingly, this subject is rarely taught in business school. Here we remind professionals what factors must be considered when selecting between the following salary-increase methods: competitive rates, cost-of-living adjustments, or performance pay. We teach the steps involved in budgeting for salary increases, and look at ways to control costs once salary increases have gone into effect.
